Establishment of The Chi Psi Educational Trust in 1926 was one of our Fraternity’s important “firsts” and one of which all Chi Psis have been proud. The Chi Psi Educational Trust is the first educational foundation in the fraternity world, with its formal incorporation in 1926 (although the endowment fund was actually started a dozen years earlier). Its purpose is to provide Brothers with leadership enhancement and personal development as well as reward scholarship and foster positive relationships with Chi Psi Fraternity.
The Trust works to develop, fund, and implement leadership and service programs, making them available to all undergraduates. This programming is known collectively as the Program for Excellence. In addition to these Fraternity educational programs, the Trust also provides scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students, respectively. Additionally, the Trust gives out a number of awards in recognition of generous philanthropy and service to the community as well as the Fraternity.
EDWARD CASSIUS SWIFT, Epsilon 1876 (Michigan), was the first #7 (president) of the twentieth century. An attorney (third generation), he practiced with his father for his early years in his hometown of Ottawa (La Salle), Illinois, southwest of Chicago. He was also a teacher, horticulturist, and farmer, vice president of the First National Bank, trustee of Ryburn Hospital, assistant town supervisor, vice president of the Illinois State Bar Association (and a member of the admissions committee), and a member of the Ottawa board of education. He was elected to the Chi Psi Presidency in 1914. A long-time member of the Executive Council, he chaired that board after his term as #7. “Skipe” Swift was the first Chi Psi leader to foresee the need for a Chi Psi endowment, and he began to raise money for it in 1914, personally soliciting alumni around the country, and reporting his progress annually at Council meetings and Conventions. While The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc., first in the Fraternity world, was officially chartered in 1926, it really began life in 1914. Skipe Swift inspired an idea that provides impact 112 years later. In the May 2026 edition of Our Legacy, we will share the materials from the initial endowment campaign that Skipe inspired. Swift and his wife, the former Helen Vincent of Kent, Conn. had two daughters. He died in 1927.
Before there was a #23 (executive director / executive secretary), the day-to-day activities of the National Fraternity were overseen by the volunteer Executive Council, which was chaired by Howie Murray for most of the 1920s. These five Brothers comprised the Council during the 1925 – 1926 academic year, which included much fundraising activity and the official establishment of the Educational Trust on 25th day of June 1926.

The Executive Council created a committee to assist Brother Swift to achieve his vision of an endowment for Chi Psi. It was chaired by Brother Matthiessen, who would later serve as #7 in 1934. These eight Brothers and the other members of the national leadership raised over $500,000 to serve as Chi Psi’s initial endowment. In today’s dollars, the fund would be over nine million.
