In Memoriam: W.S. "Bill" Hattendorf, Jr.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of W.S. “Bill” Hattendorf, Jr. (#7), Alpha Delta `69, Sigma `82, Eta `83, Zeta Delta `19.

It is with profound sadness that Chi Psi Fraternity announces the death of our beloved National President, W.S. “Bill” Hattendorf, Jr. Bill passed away on Monday, May 11, in Hanover, New Hampshire.

A 1969 graduate of the University of Georgia, Bill devoted a lifetime of service and commitment to Chi Psi. In addition to serving seven years as National President, he began his service to the Fraternity shortly after graduation as Historian. He later served as Executive Director from 1977 to 1983, editor of The Purple & Gold from 2006 to 2019, editor of three editions of The Chi Psi Story new member publication, and as a member of countless boards, committees, and task forces. Over the course of his lifetime, Bill attended 57 Chi Psi Conventions, a modern-day record unlikely to be broken.

Outside of Chi Psi, Bill was a dedicated volunteer with veterans’ organizations in New Hampshire. Drawing upon his own experiences in Vietnam, he was especially committed to supporting veterans living with PTSD. He was also deeply involved in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and later The Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew, serving in numerous volunteer capacities, most notably as Senior Warden and Verger.

Few men have devoted as much time and energy to perpetuating the bonds of fraternal life for future generations. Bill’s lifelong commitment to Chi Psi gave purpose and meaning to countless brothers and strengthened the Fraternity in immeasurable ways. Chi Psi is eternally grateful to have known and loved a Brother such as Bill Hattendorf. Those fortunate enough to have known Bill are inevitably stronger, happier, and more appreciative of the finer things in life because of his friendship.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sheila Heffernon; his sons, Wesley and Spencer; his daughter, Kelsey; and five grandchildren.
